Complimentary and Alternative Interventions
Astrology
This ancient practice may be utilized in treatment as a symbolic and archetypal framework for exploring the deeper patterns of the psyche. Rather than focusing on prediction, it is used to support self-awareness, illuminate life themes and transitions, and foster insight into the unfolding process of personal growth and healing.
Tarot and Oracle
Tarot and oracle cards may be incorporated as symbolic and archetypal tools to support self-reflection, emotional exploration, and insight. Rather than use the cards for divination, they can be utilized in treatment to provide a creative way to engage the imagination, deepen awareness of unconscious patterns, and explore personal meaning. Used collaboratively and always as an invitation rather than a directive, they can help foster greater clarity, integration, and connection with one's inner wisdom.
Shamanic Healing
Shamanic healing may be incorporated as a complementary practice that engages the symbolic, imaginal, and spiritual dimensions of experience. Rhythmic drumming or rattling may be used to facilitate a focused, contemplative state that supports inner exploration and connection with the deeper psyche. These practices can foster emotional healing, deepen self-awareness, and cultivate a greater sense of meaning, connection, authenticity, and inner wholeness..
Hypnosis & Meditation
This practice may incorporate hypnotic and meditative techniques to promote relaxation, emotional healing, and deeper self-awareness. By entering a calm, focused state, clients can access inner imagery, symbolic insight, and a greater connection with their own inner wisdom.
I do not believe there is a one-size-fits-all approach to mental health and healing. Therefore, at Matter and Spirit Counseling Services, I integrate both empirically supported interventions as well as more unconventional, complementary, and alternative approaches to healing. “Complementary and Alternative Interventions” have not received the same empirical backing as conventional treatments, but they are ethically aligned within the clinical framework that informs my practice. I understand that, for some, this may be an unusual approach to therapy. This is why I explain each of these Complementary and Alternative Interventions in my Intake Paperwork Package, and I am always available to answer any questions or concerns you may have about these approaches.
After your initial evaluation, we will decide together if you are a good candidate for these Complementary and Alternative Interventions. For purposes of clarity, each Complementary and Alternative Intervention is used as complimentary to empirically supported interventions, NOT as a replacement for clinical care. In other words, these Complementary and Alternative Interventions are used as supplemental tools rather than standalone solutions for mental health concerns. You always have the choice not to incorporate any or all of these Complimentary and Alternative Interventions in treatment. Similarly, you may find that you like certain Complementary and Alternative Interventions but not others. I am happy to accommodate your preferences.
The Complementary and Alternative Interventions I utilize are explained in detail in my Informed Consent for Treatment and APPENDIX I: THERAPEUTIC PROCESS, MODALITIES, AND INTERVENTIONS, which will be made available to you during the intake process. Each practice is clearly and explicitly aligned with well-established psychological theory, and they are used in treatment only when clinically appropriate and with your informed consent.
